Album Review: Extremity – Extremely Fucking Dead

On paper, Extremity has a dream lineup: Aesop Dekker (Vhöl, ex-Agalloch, ex-Ludicra) on drums, Marissa Martinez-Hoadley (Cretin, ex-Repulsion) on guitars, Shelby Lermo (Vastum) on guitars/vocals, and Erika Osterhout (Necrosic, ex-Lycus) on bass. Still, I have to admit that I approached their debut EP Extremely Fucking Dead with a bit of trepidation. Sure, they’re basically a Bay Area metal ‘supergroup,’ but in bands like this, the whole isn’t always as good as they sum of it’s parts. In this case, though, Extremely Fucking Dead is every bit as good as I was hoping it would be, largely because Extremity sound like they’re having an absolute blast as they tear through an all-too-brief 25-minutes of fetid, cavernous old school death metal.

With song titles like “Crepuscular Crescendo” and “Chalice of Pus,” one might assume that Extremity have their collective tongue firmly in their (rotten) cheek on Extremely Fucking Dead, but from a musical perspective their approach is no-nonsense. Killer riffs abound on the EP, ranging from tremolo picked single note riffs to crushing slower passages, and almost everything in between. After a brief, creepily atmospheric intro track, “Crepuscular Crescendo” comes roaring out of the gates like early Incantation, while standout second track “Bestial Destiny” has the grinding, swinging feel of Symphony of Sickness-period Carcass. “Chalice of Pus” starts off like Morbid Angel before transitioning into a sick, swaggering half-time riff that might be the strongest on the record. “Fatal Immortality” is a thrashier number in the spirit of Bolt Thrower, while closer “Extremely Fucking Dead” ends the album on a note of barely controlled chaos, deftly cycling through more riffs and tempo changes than I could keep track of.

I’m not sure if Extremely Fucking Dead is meant to be a one-off homage to OSDM, but I really hope that isn’t the case. This record is so fucking good that it would be a shame if this were the only music we hear from Extremity. If you’re into death metal at all, you’re going to find something to like with this one.

Extremely Fucking Dead will be available on April 7 via 20 Buck Spin.
