Iron Hops: Dogfish Head – Saison Du Buff

Dogfish Head Saison Du Buff (2017 Vintage, brewed in collaboration with Stone Brewing and Victory Brewing Company) Saison / Farmhouse Ale (6.8% ABV)

Pour: 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass (for lack of a tulip)

Appearance: Coppery to tannish with the slightest touch of cloudiness. Thick head, resilient lacing.

Aroma: Herbaceous, rosemary spiciness befitting this fine example of the funky farmhouse style. A bit resiny but not noticeably hoppy (they’re in there, though).

Taste: Bright tang on the front end with yeasty funk throughout. A range of in-your-face herb notes from thyme to lemongrass. Finishes smooth with only a touch of lingering funkiness, like walking out of an alfalfa field.

Mouthfeel: Medium body (but feels weightier)

If you thought Saison season was over with the end of Summer, think again. This beer landed back in April but there’s still some to be found, and it’s a perfect complement to fall flavors and Thanksgiving cooking. For the past four years, Dogfish Head, Stone, and Victory have alternated brewing this collaborative recipe, and this is DH’s second turn at the helm. Practice makes perfect, it seems. An addictively guzzleable Saison experience.
