Track Premiere: Against the Grain – “Angels and Devils”

Against the Grain has long been my favorite Bad Religion album. Now, I have no idea if Against the Grain’s name is a tribute to the godfathers of SoCal punk (I kind of doubt it, actually), but there’s definitely plenty of that same sort of attitude to be found on Cheated Death, the Motor City Speed-Rockers’ fifth full-length. There’s plenty of attitude to be found on the record, period – along with a healthy dose of blues influence and some serious songwriting chops. In fact, their overall vibe is a bit like how I imagine the Allman Brothers might have sounded if they’d somehow been punk-influenced: stomping riffs, galloping beats, and all those sweet, sweet leads…

No band worth their salt, though, has only one side to its musical personality, and Against the Grain is no exception. “Devils and Angels,” the epic centerpiece of Cheated Death, begins all slow-burning and bluesy before transitioning into a veritable orgy of bitchin’ lead guitars in its second half, including some hella tasty twin harmonies that close out the track. This one will have you shedding a tear into your mug of barley soda and pumping your fist in the air, and we couldn’t be more stoked to be premiering it today at the Vault.

Cheated Death will be available on February 9 via Ripple Music.
