2018 Mid-Year Extravaganza: The Best of 2018 So Far…Part II

Part II – here we go…

**********

Matthias Schmidt

I don’t want to sound like an old man who is complaining about how fast time passes by, but I find it hard to believe that 2018 is already halfway over. These six months really felt like a few weeks. Maybe because they were six pretty busy months for me, but that’s another story, not to be told here. In spite of all the stuff I had to do this year, somehow I still managed to listen to more music than I did in any (half-) year before. And, dang, has it been a good year for music thus far. While the perfect 10/10 record doesn’t seem to have been released yet and I’m still waiting for my love-at-first-listen album of the year, many of 2018’s offerings come pretty close to that. Especially the black and death metal genres have been very fruitful again with lots of unique and impressing albums. Picking only ten favorites from the list of over 200 records I listened to this year was a difficult task and the resulting list turned out to be a little unbalanced, genre-wise, so I’ve thrown in some honorable mentions for good measure. That being said, I’m pretty excited for the second half of the year. With many exciting albums already announced, it promises to be just as good as the first one.

Top Ten (in alphabetical order):

Altars of Grief – Iris

明日の叙景 (Asunojokei) – わたしと私だったもの (Awakening)

Bloodbark – Bonebranches

Drudkh – Їм часто сниться капіж

Monotheist – Scourge

Panegyrist – Hierurgy

Panopticon – The Scars of Man on the Once Nameless Wilderness Pt. I & II

Rivers of Nihil – Where Owls Know My Name

Slugdge – Esoteric Malacology

Ungfell – Mythen, Mären, Pestilenz

Honorable Mentions:

Anna von Hausswolff – Dead Magic
EXIMIA – Visitors
Hollywood Burns – Invaders
Thy Catafalque – Geometria
Vallendusk – Fortress of Primal Grace

Most anticipated:

I’m pretty excited for the new Deafheaven album Ordinary Corrupt Human Love; the first few singles were very promising. Apart from that, most of the releases I’m looking forward to have no title or release date yet (and some of them might not even get released before 2019), e. g. new albums by Amiensus, Babymetal, Beyond Creation, Broken Flesh, Départe, Fit for a King, and Grave Declaration.

Well, 2018 has been a pretty damn good year for metal so far. I found putting this list together quite difficult due to the breadth of quality releases I had to choose from. There is literally SO MUCH METAL OUT THERE. Importantly, so much good metal. Never let anyone tell you that there’s no new music worth listening to these days; those people are plainly wrong.

For some reason April seems to have been an exceptional month, with five out of my ten albums below seeing the light of day then. Why? Who knows. It also seems to be the case that the year seems to be getting better and better too, and already I’ve heard some stunning albums that are coming out in July.
Anyway, let’s get right down to it. Below is a selection of some of my favourite releases that 2018 has graced us with so far, presented in a kind of loose order. Enjoy!

King Goat – Debt of Aeons

Distances – Diableries

Sadistik Forest – Morbid Majesties

Altar of Perversion – Intra Naos

Messa – Feast for Water

Wayfarer – World’s Blood

In Vain – Currents

Soldat Hans – Es Taut

Hamferð – Támsins Likam

Death Engine – Place Noire

Honourable mention –

Entropy Created Consciousness – Impressions of the Morning Star

Sam Coons

2018 is off the fucking chain.  I can’t remember the last year I was this excited each and every week to see what delicious, fresh hell awaited me in new releases.  I had a really hard time narrowing this list down, and there’s still so much to look forward to in the coming months. Disclaimer: Not all of these albums are guaranteed a spot on my final year-end list, and my honorable mentions could definitely be bumped up as the year progresses.  Here’s to a year that is definitely keeping us all on our toes.

Barren Earth – A Complex of Cages

Arkona – Khram

Judas Priest – Firepower

Taphos – Come Ethereal Somberness

Zeal & Ardor – Stranger Fruit

Ascension – Under Ether

Ghost – Prequelle

Craft – White Noise and Black Metal

Grimorium Verum – Revenant

YOB – This Raw Heart

Honorable Mentions

Necrophobic – Mark of the Necrogram
Nekrokraft – Servants
Sleep – The Sciences
At The Gates – To Drink From The Night Itself
Gra – Vasen

Lists of this persuasion are purely subjective and meant to be so, but that means providing some context to the maker’s reasoning and approach to building the list can be helpful. This year – and my ears – have been dominated by quality death metal. I could’ve made a top 20 that was purely death metal, but that wouldn’t be a true representation of my tastes, so great releases by Our Place of Worship is Silence, The Grotesquery, Depravity,Mortuousand Skinless(to name just a few) all fell to the guillotine.

Instead, I think about this list like one of those desert island questions – what 10 albums from 2018 so far would I be willing to listen to as my only source of music for the rest of my life if I were stranded on an island? To be truthful to my tastes I would need variety in my life or I would intentionally cut my arm open and dive into the sea to await the sweet release of death in a shark’s open maw. So, below you will find those 10 I could survive on, 5 that I need more time to digest and one album that I can’t wait to hear.

Side note: This list is sorely lacking in grindcore, so if anyone has any recommendations, please comment below or hit me up on Twitter (@OldManHotz)

Autokrator – Hammer of the Heretics

Tomb Mold – Manor of Infinite Forms

Fucked and Bound – Suffrage

Of Feather and Bone –Bestial Hymns of Perversion

GosT – Possessor

Slugdge – Esoteric Malacology

Messa – Feast for Water

Panopticon – The Scars of Man on the Once Nameless Wilderness (I and II)
Yob – Our Raw Heart
Délétère – De Horae Leprae
