EP Review: Ritual Warfare – Total World Extermination – Total Fucking Annihilation

Ritual Warfare are an up-and-coming extreme metal act that only has this short EP to offer so far. They’re located in Canada and make a very aggressive hybrid of extreme metal that resides closest to death/thrash, with more weight on the death side. Total World Extermination – Total Fucking Annihilation is as hateful and brooding as it suggests, thus loaded with lyrics centered around hatred towards humans, God, and the likes.

Weirdly enough, for something that doesn’t even touch the twenty-minute mark, it actually isn’t super one-sided. That’s good in regards to avoiding stagnation, but at the same time, there isn’t a lot of consistency either. Drastic changes in vocal style can be heard between the title track, “Rot Before Death,” and “Commence Human Slaughter.” The three tunes make for a healthy punch in the gut with thrashy riffs, and the vocals themselves are pretty solid. On the other hand, they’re also quick and done before it really feels like they’ve gone anywhere, and the rhythmic make-up could have a little more flow to it.

If that’s not enough, the two tracks tacked onto the end are both covers that don’t resemble the build from the original material at all. Not to say that these aren’t well performed by any means because they are. But the transition is so awkward that I couldn’t help but not overlook it. “Tortured Souls” is a Slaughter cover (not the glam metal band) which bears a structure that has much more of an old school feel. The cover of GBH’s “Prayer Of A Realist” is obviously far more punk sounding than anything with that crusty tinge that lines the hinges. So yeah, lot’s going on here in such a short run-time

Clearly, there’s some very strong potential here, it’s just quite rookie and needs some better work with transitions and consistency. I won’t complain about there not being chops or anything, because that would be a straight up lie. Total World Extermination – Total Fucking Annihilation is worth a spin at minimum, especially with it being so short in length.

Total World Extermination – Total Fucking Annihilation came out on January 14th, 2019 and can be found on Bandcamp.
