2019 Mid-Year Extravaganza: The Best of 2019 So Far…Part I

Below are some of the most enjoyable extreme metal releases that I’ve heard so far this year. Unexpectedly, the names of 60% of the bands listed below start with either an S or a V. What does this mean? Probably nothing, but I somehow feel it’s worth noting. Anyway, given in alphabetical order of band name, I present you with my wondrous list. Listen and become obsessed.

Ataraxie – Résignés

Déhà – Cruel Words

Equipoise – Demiurgus

Ligæder – Den Tomme Menneskehed

Sermon – Birth of the Marvellous

Sinmara – Hvísl Stjarnanna

Somn – The All-Devouring

Vimur – Triumphant Master of Fates

Vltimas – Something Wicked Marches In

Vous Autres – Champ du Sang

My inbox has been flooded the entire year, but I wouldn’t dare complain about drowning in an ocean of heavy music promos. My approach has always been that I’d die trying to swallow the ocean instead of swimming out of it. So I track all of the new records I listen to on a document I update daily, and I slip the record into the ordered list based on my first-listen gut feeling. These rankings will likely change as I approach autumn and start officially ordering albums for various end-year lists. I’m pretty surprised by the clean singing VS. growling ratio here, but the heart wants what it wants. Jam these gems ASAP.

Duel – Valley of Shadows (Heavy Psych Sounds)

Full of Hell – Weeping Choir (Relapse)

Troll – Legend Master (Shadow Kingdom)

Devil Master – Satan Spits on Children of Light (Relapse)

Dreadnought – Emergence (Profound Lore)

Spirit Adrift – Divided by Darkness (20 Buck Spin)

Martyrdöd – Hexhammaren (Southern Lord)

Lord Dying – Mysterium Tremendum (Entertainment One)

LIGÆDER – Den Tomme Menneskehed (Independent)

Abyssal – A Beacon in the Husk (Profound Lore)
