Before we start, can we take a moment to appreciate how incredible and fierce the band name Bloodsoaked Necrovoid is? And the fact that the album sleeve looks even more threatening than the name suggests? It’s really true. The Apocryphal Paths Of The Ancient 8th Vitriolic Transcendence is a hellish nightmare of crushing and grinding doom/death riffs, overlaid with horrific vocals that emit sounds reminiscent to one being dragged across a floor of rusty saw blades. A compilation of the first two demos by this Costa Rican band is the true root at stake, but you can easily take the whole thing as one giant serving with little variance.
And that’s just it; with all of this being said, I think it’s pretty fair to say that Bloodsoaked Necrovoid take this execution just a bit too far. Just like the Portland-based Witchbones, you’ll find it difficult to discern one track from another. The goal of instilling fear and discomfort is certainly achieved, but man, oh man, is it ever hard to digest this. The first half is the grimier side, taking the trudging doom/death riffs and throwing them into death metal wood-chippers to create furious winds of riffing shards. The vocals on “Metaphysical Prolapse Through Purulent Detaching Nightmares” gives it a slightly higher identity, as it jumps around different hoarse and guttural wavelengths while adding some higher shrieks to the end.
The second half is the tiniest bit refined, as the instrumentation seems to stick together with a dash more adhesive. That makes the vocals come in more sharply, and they’re even more unpleasant on this rendition of Hell. Gurgling makes its way in, covering this pool of shards with mucky filth. If that’s not enough, the deeper you descend into it, the more the guitars kick in with a droning approach. What a fucking mess! But I can’t pretend that it isn’t compelling at times. “Substance Conceiled In Open Conduit Discharging Flesh – Penetrating Agony” (holy FUCK what a title!) is one of the longest ones, implementing the most amount of stomping rhythmic passages, which was a nice change from the drawn-out buzz of the doom riffs.
Honest to God, I really don’t know who to recommend this to, or if I even want to keep coming back to it. On one hand, it certainly fills the desires for everything dealing in harsh and unimaginable fear and pain through music. On the other, you really need to be in a specific mindset to enjoy something so wretched. And I can’t say the compositions are that great beyond the shocking idea of it. Take that with a grain of salt; most people are either going to love this or hate this. I really can’t decide. But let the song titles give you an idea of what you’re in for.
