Act Of Impalement
Perdition Cult
Released on August 10th, 2018
Death/doom/black metal

Act Of Impalement is an extreme act that reigns all over the place, with one full-length titled Perdition Cult to date. They use death metal as their backbone for the majority of the run, but the tones and blistering soundscapes allow for plenty of blackened blisters. The doom comes in when the gradual trudges drop to deep levels to back harsh vocals and hard drum kicks. It’s nice and brief, and one of Caligari Records’ older dishes worth checking out. Truly invokes some discomfort in all the right ways!

Triumvirate

Having only just discovered Archivist, I have been hungrily devouring their three-album discography. Each album is phenomenal, but this week I’ve been mainly spinning their latest one Triumvirate. Combining black metal, post-metal, and shoegaze into material that’s ethereal, melodic, and highly emotive, this is affecting atmospheric art that’s both beautiful and devastating at the same time. This is music-as-a-journey, and these lush soundscapes are some of the best I’ve heard for this sort of style.

The last thing I expected out of Indonesia was Altars of Madness-era Morbid Angel worship, but here it is and it rules. Admittedly, the music doesn’t ape them as much as the vocals do, but that shouldn’t discourage you from checking out how great this album is.

4 Doors to Death – Vol. II

Welcome to the Showcase Showdown of the Price is Grim. Let’s take a look behind the 4 Doors to Death to see what you could win!

Door #1 – Nucleus’ brand of death metal coincides well with the euphemism pushing up daisies because there is a beauty in the technical approach they take, but it’s still just coating a cold slab of meaty death. These two tracks are the only ones to elevate the mind before the remainder grinds you back to the dirt your pig ass prefers to roll in.

Door #2 – Ectoplasma immediately announce their intention to eschew Nucleus’ finesse for ugliness with their sample of gurgling demon screams. As old school as their mentality is to use a clip from Alien on their final track, their approach to death metal is just as retro – simply pummel and provide riffs that force the head to bang.

Door #3 – Following Ectoplasma’s lead, Fetid Zombie pull you from the dirt straight down into the mud at the bottom of a grave with an even grittier production and simpler riffs. Despite what seems like meathead music at first, they boast an excellent guitar lead in their opening track, some haunting operatic vocals in the second and offer the most unnerving guest howls from Indy’s own Kyle Shaw (vocalist, Obscene) throughout.

Door #4 – Temple of Void bring things back to a modern-day feel with a thick production while slowing things down a perfect death-doom crawl to close this affair. They even had the gall to throw in an instrumental track that primarily implements clean guitars. It probably sucks, right? WRONG! It will still crush you into the void of nothingness these Detroit sickos built their temple upon.
